Shared Vision

"Community Bridge is a powerful demonstration of the contributions of art to community health. This project helped to inspire the founding of the Arts and Health Outreach Initiative at Penn State, which demonstrates and documents the interrelationships between the arts and health, including holistic community life and well being. The Initiative is supported by the Colleges of Arts & Architecture, Health & Human Development, and Medicine, and Penn State Outreach and Cooperative Extension."
–– Ermyn King, Coordinator, Arts and Health Outreach Initiative, The Pennsylvania State University

The Dreaming will build upon the remarkable success of Shared Vision’s prototype participatory project, Community Bridge - www.sharedvision.org. The bridge has become one of Frederick County, Maryland's major attractions and a powerful catalyst to end a fifteen-year deadlock and ignite the development of Carroll Creek Park, Frederick’s most important economic development project. It has proved beyond question the power of participatory public art to engage the community, bridge neighborhoods, encourage reinvestment, foster diversity, attract international participation and publicity, build cultural tourism, expand arts audiences, leverage redevelopment, and amplify the social benefits of the public art project many times over. There are numerous indicators of success, so many that the project helped inspire an initiative to study the impact of art on community health at The Pennsylvania State University. It is the voice of the community speaking through the artwork that gives it the power to be a catalyst on multiple levels.
