The Vision

"The fabric of community is woven one dream at a time."

- William Cochran, artist

The sculptural glass veil on the east wall of the FSK Hotel floats over an architectural-scale weaving that at first glance resembles the color and scale of the building's brick. Although it appears dimensional and real, this weaving is a painted trompe l’oeil ("trick of the eye") illusion.

As part of the artistic team, Margaret Hluch collaborated with William Cochran over 18 months to create the scale model of the weaving that was used by the artist to create the full-scale painted illusion.

This weaving layer of The Dreaming is partially visible around the glass veil and visible though the glass in a broken and diffracted way. The weaving is a metaphor for how each of us weaves a thread into the social fabric of our community.

William invited half a dozen of his painting students from around the country to help create the backpainting for this weaving in September of 2006. The backpainting is the portion of the weaving that is seen in a broekne and diffused way through the sculptural glass. This intense program, called The Dreaming Practicum, was redubbed "the Outward Bound of the art world" by the exhausted but inspired participants. Following the Practicum, William created the more visible sections of the weaving in the Cultural Arts Center near the site for installation on the wall in the spring of 2007.

Several of the weavings samples created for William by weaver Margaret Hluch have been divided into smaller fragments and affixed to "Thread of a Dream" certificates that were created by the artistic team to honor donors and supporters. You can learn more about these certificates by contacting us here.
